Medical Information

Almost all of us will, at some stage, suffer from a ‘sluggish’ bowel or constipation. The way you treat your sluggish bowel or constipation can have a major impact on whether or not it develops into something altogether more chronic and disabling.

When a bout of sluggish bowel or constipation strikes you, the first thing to do is ask yourself whether it is due to a change in your lifestyle or diet, and to consider whether there may be a more serious underlying cause.  If you experience a sustained change in your bowel habit that can’t be put down to lifestyle or diet changes (the use of some medicines, particularly those containing codeine, can certainly bring on an attack of constipation) or if you experience any sustained anal and rectal symptoms that do not subside, especially bleeding, you must see your doctor.
